The Forest Gym - Where Bodybuilding Means Hard Work

Contest News

Great win for Gustavo Badell at the San Francisco GP in Hayward, California on March 11.     He swept the board in every round to give himself a an impressive First Place.  This was Gustavo at his very best, fuller and sharper than at the Arnold Classic just one week earlier.   He beat Branch Warren, the new tornado in Pro Bodybuilding by a convincing 13 point margin.

Gustavo was quite emotional when the results were announced, dropping onto his knees on teh stage and pounding teh boards in triumph.  He admitted that he had got things wrong the week before at teh Arnold and now he is all fired up to give his best at teh Olympia.  I don’t know what he weighed on teh day but 6 days out he was 265 lbs - quite a weight for a man his height.

Melvin Anthony was applauded loudly for a great posing display and this with his symmetry was enough for 3rd. He was not quite as sharp as he could have been but his tiny waist always impresses.

In 4th was Mustafa Mohammad, with Tony Freeman 5th.   Tony arguably could have been higher, but at least wasn't totally overlooked as many thought he had been in past shows.

After the two afternoon rounds of the contest, it was clear Gustavo and Branch Warren were battling it out for the top spot. The Venezuelan was brimming with confidence - he turned two callouts into impromptu posedowns, grunting loudly on each pose and aggressively moving toward the front of the stage, followed by other competitors. This upset the head judge, Steve Weinberger, who ordered the group back in line. Flex thinks that Gustavo Badell continues to be an enigma.  When first he came out for his mandatories, he seemed good but not spectacular, but when the comparisons began, he stood out.   Branch Warren, the man-mountain from Texas, meanwhile, was absolutely solid whenever he flexed, but in between poses he seemed to be a little smooth[ish].  Perhaps he is suffering a little competition fatigue?

Congratulations to Eddie Abbew and Rickie Welling for making the top 15.   This was Rickie Welling at his very best.

Dave Palumbo’s period of gaol and house arrest came to an end in November 2005 and he is back to writing his regular columns in MD and running his business.  Good luck to him.  As you can see from this picture, he does have a super freaky physique, which one day we may hopefully see on stage over here in Europe.    But that will probably depend on his getting a pro card and in these days of politically correct bodybuilding, that may never happen.

Wayne deMilia announces a New York Night of the Champions for September 2006 via his new Pro Division.  The new organisation is planning to have six contests this year, increasing to 12 next year and 25 in 2008.  He has indicated that he has had a lot of interest in the new contests but every bodybuilder will have to decide if the organisation can make a profit and keep going.   Wayne is promising spectacular shows with the bodybuilders well looked after throughout.

Terrific result at the Australian GP on 19 March when Ronnie Rockel came from nowhere to take top spot beating out last year’s winner Lee Priest, Mustafa Mohammad and Branch Warren. Vince Taylor, 49 years old came in 3rd with other veteran 48 year old Francis Benfatto in the top six.   Britain’s Eddie Abbew was 9th just ahead of German giant Heiko Kallbach.

The first place was a close run thing between Ronnie and Lee Priest. Lee Priest was sporting his new face tattoo — which has lead more than one observer to suggest that he has a few kangaroos on the loose somewhere. Ronnie’s win raises his status enormously and we wish him lots of luck.  Vince Taylor looked in terrific shape — perhaps a bit light in the legs — a problem for all aging  bodybuilders.  Mustaffa Mohammad and Branch Warren were both a bit off and appeared to be holding a bit of water.  Francis Benfatto was fortunate to get 6th place with a very badly torn pec.

This was Gustavo Badell at the San Francisco Pro Show.  I think this is one of the most impressive pictures that I have ever seen of any bodybuilder — the size, shape and condition are absolutely awesome.  He was a full 13 points ahead of Branch Warren in 2nd place — and he is no slouch when it comes to size and condition.   But it would need a superman to beat this.  In this condition he could shift Ronnie from his Mr Olympia pedestal.
