The Forest Gym - Where Bodybuilding Means Hard Work

Out & About

Bits of news has reached us from around the world of Bodybuilding that shows that nothing ever runs smoothly.

  • Milos Sarchev has been “suspended” by the IFBB for statements he made after last year’s Asian Games, when he was dissatisfied with the placing of two of his competitors. He suggested that the organisers had fixed the results. The judges may have been incompetent but it is going too far to suggest that they cheated — unless you have the evidence.  What the suspension means, I have no idea, since he is not himself a competitor.
  • Anyone remember Harold Poole?  He was the Pro Mr America in 1968 and was 2nd to Larry Scott in the Mr Olympias in 1965, 1966 and 1967.  In his day he was one of the greats.  Born on Christmas Day 1943, he is now 63 years old and still training three times per week. He was always keen on Martial Arts and still practices Tae-Kwon-Do.
  • Another man from the past is Robbie Robinson, also well into his 60s and still looking in good condition, training three times per week.  Robbie had a tiny waist and terrific biceps.   I saw him at a seminar he gave in the conference room of the Richmond Hill Hotel [Surrey] about 30 years ago.  The gig was organised by Wag Bennett and Oscar Heidenstam from NABBA. Robbie was asked to demonstrate his techniques with every bicep exercise that anyone could think up.   He had an audience of bodybuilders as well as most of the hotel staff — who were, as they say, gob-smacked.
  • Newcastle United Premiership footballers are much impressed by the new training techniques being introduced by new manager Sam Allardyce. Big Sam insists on proper diet, food supplements and weight training to get his players into peak condiition.  It is incredible that such techniques still seem new and almost revolutionary in some parts of the highest levels of UK football.  In other areas, many athletes come to bodybuilders for advice because they know so much more than anybody else about diet and muscle/strength training.  Bodybuilders get slagged off by the media but athletes know better.
  • Victor Conte, former head of the Balco group that got into terrible trouble over the THG story, is now heading up a new company SNAC.  He has, of course, a well-known name and his new business seems already to be doing very well.   However, he has been declared persona non grata for the 2007 Olympia show and had his already booked stand and exhibition space cancelled by Weider, without explanation.   What can it mean?
  • More information from pointless reseach projects. com. Muscular Men, including Bodybuilders, are twice as likely to have multiple girl-friends than wimps. A team from the University of California in Los Angeles tells us that women prefer less appealing men who are less likely to roam and may be more romantic.. However did we manage without this information?
  • A few months ago there was a story in almost all newspapers around the world about WWF wrestler Chris Benoit, which suggested that his murdering his son and wife before commiting suicide was a result of his use of steroids.  Now the WWF has put out an official statement that says that such stories were sensationalistic and not supported by any evidence. A view that would be endorsed by most experts in the field.
  • Silvio Samuels won the Europa Super Show in Atlanta beating Will Harris [2nd], Bill Wilmor [3rd], Quincy Taylor [4th] and Omar Deckard [5th]. Hunni Glanville was an unplaced 17th.  I looked at pictures of the men in 15th and 16th and I have to say that they did appear to be in better condition. Hunni has a great shape and he needs to keep that when he is at maximum bodyweight and come in super-sharp. There were 26 competitors. Silvio Samuels was outweighed by the big men by as much as 50 lbs but overall he was the best balanced and has super ripped glutes — these days this is a prerequisite for any Bodybuilder who wants to convince us that he is RIPPED.
  • For some reason, this show had a prelude in the form of an U 210lbs Class on the Friday, which awarded $3,000 to the winner.. This also was won by Silvio Samuels — quite easily — he was much better than Ricky “Tricky” Jackson in 2nd and Guy Ducasse in 3rd.  This class had 17 competitors.
  • From Georgia to Yorkshire. At the WABBA Final Frontier Show in Batley on 29th July, Brian Connelly reappeared after some time away from contests [I think] — in great shape — and won the O40s — he must be well over 40 by now — and the Overall title.   Well done man.  The show was a bit short on competitors but was well supported by sponsors and the audience.  Dorian Yates, the six times Mr. Olympia was there and Trevor Chung, MD of supplement suppliers Garnell did a guest spot.  He was looking big, full and sharp. The show was supported also by leading Motor Cycle supplier Padgetts, who had a trade stand and exhibited two of their bikes. “Buy a Bike. Now!” they advised.  Good idea.
  • The NPC USA Show on 27th/28th July produced a line-up of great physiques and gave a Pro Card to SHW and Overall winner Ben White [right]. HW winner DeShaun Grimez also received his Pro Card.  Silvio Samuels is now trained by Charles Glass after a falling out with Milos Sarchev.
  • At the same NPC USA Show they handed out six Pro Cards to Fitness competitors. In the Women’s Bodybuilding a Pro Card went to Jennifer Sedia.
  • Dennis Wolf was an impressive looking winner of the Keystone Pro Show.   Now looks a good prospect of a top six placing at the 2007 Olympia.
  • Following Sylvester Stallone’s conviction in Australia for illegally importing HGH and steroids, we hear that Rocky Balboa has been stripped of all his boxing titles!!
  • Eddie Abbew is carrying the flag for Britain at the 2007 Olympia. At this moment he is still the only British competitor who has qualified.
  • Marius Dohne [see p3] won a Pro/Am Show in South Africa at the end of July beating last years winner in the HW Class at the Nationals.
  • Bad news about Reg Park, Mr Universe 1951 who is suffering from skin cancer.  Now in his 70s Reg, born in Leeds was one of the first Bodybuilding superstars. He even made a few Hercules movies, where he looked very impressive — even if the films were not up to much.   We hope that he will respond to treatment and make a recovery from this disease.

    Trey Brewer

After staggering us all with his size and condition when he came on the scene last year, Trey Brewer is taking a whole year off to get bigger.  How big can he get? Look out for the behemoth in 2008.

Big H with Brian Connelly at the WPF Worlds in France in 2000

Winner of the 2007 Keystone Pro Show Dennis Wolf. Dennis was born in in 1978 in Tokmok in Kyrgyzstan of German parents but he grew up speaking Russian.  He and his brothers moved back to Germany in 1991 but he had to learn to speak the language. In Germany he worked as a painter and window installer right up until he married his long-term girl-friend, while they were in Philadelphia, and he became a full-time Bodybuilder.  After 10 years of training he now has great prospects of making it to the top — in spite of not being an American.

    PDI France

We understand that the PDI France Show is still on and will take place in Salon en Provence on 27th October — same day as NABBA Universe.  Salon is about 50 miles NW of Marseilles.  Star name on the Bill is Rodney St Cloud.
